Job Title: DNA Specimen Collector
Location: Houston, TX (and surrounding areas)
Position Type: Subcontractor (Full-time and Part-time)

Job Summary

Onset DNA is seeking a skilled and professional Phlebotomist & DNA Specimen Collector with an entrepreneurial spirit to join our team as a commission-based subcontractor. This role offers a competitive commission structure per completed test, with additional bonus opportunities based on appointment types and performance.

As a DNA Specimen Collector, you will be responsible for collecting DNA samples (via buccal swabs and blood draws) for a variety of relationship and lifestyle DNA tests, including Paternity, Non-invasive Prenatal Paternity, Non-invasive Gender Reveal, Pet, and Food Sensitivity testing, etc. Collections will take place in diverse settings, such as homes, workplaces, legal offices, and medical facilities.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, technological proficiency, and the ability to handle sensitive information with strict confidentiality. As a subcontractor, you will be responsible for withholding your taxes and maintaining your mileage transportation expenses while enjoying flexible working hours and competitive pay per completed test. A background check and drug screening will be required as Onset DNA is a drug-free company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Marketing & Territory Management: DNA Collectors are required to actively market and book their own appointments within their assigned territory. They must be skilled in territory management and will be provided with brochures, marketing materials, and flyers. The collector must demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit and work proactively to meet and exceed performance quotas.
  • DNA Sample Collection: Collect DNA samples (via buccal swabs or blood draws) in accordance with established protocols, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and strict adherence to chain of custody.
  • Client Interaction: Provide compassionate and professional care while explaining the DNA collection process and answering any questions clients may have.
  • Identification Verification: Confirm the identity of clients using valid identification documents before collecting DNA specimens.
  • Chain of Custody Documentation: Complete and maintain accurate chain of custody forms for all collected samples, ensuring legal admissibility and tracking.
  • Biohazard Disposal: Follow proper biohazard disposal procedures as per local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Universal Precautions: Adhere to universal precautions to minimize risk of contamination or exposure during DNA collection, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand hygiene.
  • Travel: Use personal vehicle in traveling to various locations in the Houston area to collect samples as needed.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain the confidentiality of all client information, in strict compliance with HIPAA and company policies.
  • Reporting: Provide timely updates to the Operations Manager on sample collections and report any issues encountered.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that all equipment, including collection supplies, is sanitized, functional, and properly maintained.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Some college or relevant healthcare certifications (e.g., phlebotomy) are required.
  • Experience: Prior experience in DNA collection, phlebotomy, or specimen collection is required. Training will be provided.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • High attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Knowledge of biohazard disposal and universal precautions to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
    • Ability to follow strict protocols and confidentiality guidelines.
    • Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
    • Strong marketing and sales ability, with a focus on self-driven appointment generation.
  • Required Certifications:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Please Note: All applicants must have completed the following mandatory trainings prior to applying for the DNA Specimen Collector position at Onset DNA. Proof of certification will be required during the hiring process. Applicants who do not possess these mandatory certifications at the time of application will not be considered.
    • Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Training
    • Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) Training
    • HIPAA Privacy and Security Training
    • OSHA Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training
    • Infection Control and Universal Precautions Training
    • CPR/First Aid certification (optional but a plus).

Transportation

  • Must have reliable transportation with a valid driver’s license and auto insurance to travel to client locations. Proof of insurance and vehicle registration is required.

Working Conditions

  • Schedule: Flexible part-time hours, primarily on weekdays, with some evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Environment: This position requires traveling to various client locations, including homes and offices, with extended periods of standing and driving.
  • Safety: Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and is required during all DNA collection procedures.
  • Biohazard Disposal: All DNA collectors must follow state and federal laws regarding the disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Universal Precautions: Collectors must adhere to universal precautions, including proper handling of samples and personal safety measures.

Compensation

  • Pay: Enjoy a competitive, performance-based commission structure with earnings per up to $75 per completed test. Plus, take advantage of exciting bonus opportunities based on appointment types and outstanding performance!
